These rarely seen shorts and documentaries from Martin Scorsese—some made when he was still a twentysomething student at Tisch School of the Arts—offer a look into the early development of cinema's preeminent hobbitaliano (that's an Italian hobbit!). The Grand Illusion is screening five early Scorsese works: What's a Nice Girl Like You Doing in a Place Like This? (1963), It's Not Just You, Murray! (1964), 1967's The Big Shave (a dude shaves his hair off, then his face—a Vietnam thing, you know), 1974's Italianamerican (a documentary about his immigrant parents, featuring meatballs), and American Boy: A Profile of Steven Prince (1978). (Grand Illusion, 1403 NE 50th St, 523-3935. 4, 6:30, and 9 pm, $8.)
