(ART) "Demon seed or sweet innocent?" Frye Art Museum curator Robin Held writes to introduce the exhibition Little Women, Little Men: Folk Art Portraits of Children from the Fenimore Art Museum. The portraits are skewed and haunting for several reasons: the everyday clothes that now look like historical costumes, the lack of formal training by the painters, the ambivalence in social attitudes toward children, the fact that sometimes the artist was representing a child already dead. It may sound stodgy, but this traveling show of old paintings crackles with eccentricity. (Frye Art Museum, 704 Terry Ave, 622-9250. 10 am—5 pm, free.)
