(MUSIC) Just before 2005 runs out, the Long Winters have managed to release one of the best local rock records of the year, Ultimatum. The band creates sweepingly melodic indie rock that relays tales of heartbreak without sounding crestfallen. Instead their choruses soar, and electronic interruptions on tracks like "Commander Thinks Aloud" twinkle like tiny stars bursting in the background. The slightly rough-hewn quality to John Roderick's vocals keeps the songs earthbound even as the harmonies fly. (Crocodile, 2200 Second Ave, 441-5611. 9 pm, $12, 21+.)
