So should we just organize a DDoS-style protest at the offices of Facebook & Google? Send one person in every 15 minutes for a week to ask to see the advertising records, refuse to leave until they've been granted access, call the police if we're escorted out, etc?

The money system in Federal politics is fucked up. In the campaign branch that is covered by the FEC, every nickel has to be accounted for. But then the gray money attack ad economy can spend many times that much money, basically completely unaccountably. Good campaign ads are regulated to the hilt, shitty attack ads are not. Guess which ones campaigns prefer?
