Jen,
I've seen gamelan performed live at the University of Chicago Folk Festival. Totally cool music form. It's not at all like the conventional music format of the West. I can't describe it. I know it hails from Indonesia.

Just and FYI, Javanese gamelan is very different (more halus) than Balinese gamelan -- slower, not as frenetic as this video.
