Wow, the absolute state of our avant-garde "culture" these days.

@2
Get with the program, Georgie. Even the House of Windsor is accepting PoC these days.

Your "scare" quotes don't scare anyone, you know. At least not around here.

To answer the question, no. Capitalism is perfectly at home selling you anything that you like, whether that's a pineapple, a McMansion, or gender reassignment surgery. Capitalism in its purest form will sell you anything with an obliging smile and a complete lack of judgment.

It is because our nation is so devoted to capitalism that we can envision the legalization of marijuana or same-sex marriage. Arguments in favor of these changes are inevitably framed in capitalist terms (Look at all these legal pot jobs! Who could possibly object to a multi-billion dollar industry?)

This is what will drive trans rights as well. Capitalism will cater to anything.

@4. +1. Stipulating identity as the net product of an individual's purchases is a long-term project that has to date proven successful beyond any marketer's wildest dreams.

Capitalism will cater to anything, absolutely. This is the nature of the Faustian bargain it makes. It has no trouble supporting trans people if it thinks it can make a buck. If it would make more money oppressing them, it would. History is littered with the remains of movements that tied themselves to capitalism, then got crushed underfoot when some other group looked like a promising new market to serve.

Capitalism doesn't care what it is to you. It only cares what you can do for it. Whether it helps or hurts you in the process is of no concern to it, not that it's an entity or even a single coherent ideology. There is no capitalist view of trans people, or any other people. Capitalism at this level is just whatever story people will pay to hear.
