Kudos to Loven and kudos to Annex for supporting generative artists like him.
Maybe you're right, Brendan. Maybe all the talent will eventually leave Seattle. Because Seattle has so little to offer them career-wise, right? But maybe if we stop predicting that shit out loud and instead think of ways to change the current paradigm, we can eventually stop supporting the first-train-outta-town meme and start thinking of Seattle as the best home base for creating art in the country. I know it's not there yet, but some of us actually LIVE here and don't think of Seattle as merely a conservatory. Paul Mullin has been starting an interesting discussion about Seattle's status as a theater town and I hope we can all join in and actually propose some new models. The media needs to be a part of this discussion. (You've been a game player -- even instigator -- in past discussions like this. Please keep it up.) The fight is brewing. Maybe we'll lose Kyle Loven before our pasture becomes green enough, but please let's not pack his bags for him just yet.
I also took exception to the notion that we somehow "deserve" to lose this kind of talent--not only because it starts to look like a self-fulfilling prophecy, but because it's based on the assumption that we don't have talent of this magnitude treading the boards every weekend all over the city (or its outskirts).
That said, I'm excited at the prospect of seeing Loven's show, and hope he does well.
