It’s a glorious day for ice cream fiends: Portland artisan ice creamery Salt and Straw finally lands in Ballard today and is certain to inspire lines around the block with its lineup of distinctive and unusual flavor combinations. Not only that, but vegan ice cream shop Frankie & Jo’s and molten chocolate cakery Hot Cakes have announced their flavor collaborations for February, and sought-after pop-up chef Tarik Abdullah spices up ice cream with two flavors for Central District Ice Cream for Black History Month, with a kickoff party tonight to celebrate. Find all of this and more below, and, for more delicious things, check out our guides to where to go for Valentine’s Day and Mardi Gras, our food news post from last week, and our complete food & drink calendar. Plus, we've also launched a new feature that's just the thing for a dreary February: a complete list of hygge-AF restaurants and bars with fireplaces.
After closing its original Boren location after 50 years of business, the 24-hour favorite has landed in its new location in Pioneer Square. Guests can scope out the new digs, which retain the flagship’s famous high-backed chairs, captain chairs, and classic decor as well as the original menu, when the restaurant opens on Saturday, February 10, at 6 am.
This bar with a laidback vintage vibe from bartender Dustin Haarstad, who formerly spent four years at the James Beard-nominated “whiskey and bitters emporium” Canon, will feature beer, shots, high-end comfort fare, and pinball machines (with cocktails and a patio coming soon) and is set to open sometime this month.
Broadview Tap House
This tap house is family- and dog-friendly, with 26 taps, to-go bottles and growler fills, a patio, and a kids' play area. Their grand opening is this Saturday, with food truck fare from Bread and Circuses and 314 Pie and raffles, prizes, swag, and beer specials all weekend.
A new location of the fast made-to-order pizza and salad chain hits West Seattle today (joining the area’s myriad other pizza options like Supreme and Pizzeria 22). To celebrate their grand opening, they’re giving away free pizza or salad for the first 52 customers, and all sales from the first day will be donated to nonprofit FareStart, which "transforms lives by empowering people who are homeless or living in poverty through life skills, job training and employment in the foodservice industry."
Salt and Straw
We’ve been anxiously awaiting the cult creamery from Portland (and its attendant lines snaking around the block) since July 2017. Now, the wait is finally over as they touch down in Ballard today, with a Capitol Hill store to follow next Friday. Aside from its perilously lengthy queues, the artisan ice cream shop is perhaps best known for its intriguing flavor collabs with local producers, so look forward to their interpretations of beloved Seattle fixtures in the form of flavors like Beecher's Cheese with peppercorn toffee, raspberry Rachel's Ginger Beer coconut cream, Ellenos Yogurt matcha, and Elm Coffee with Westland Distillery Whiskey. This month also brings the Chocolatier Series, a collection of five limited edition flavors made with products from Seattle chocolate makers for Valentine’s Day: Fran’s Chocolates Almond Gold Bar, Intrigue’s Green Basil & Chocolate Cocoa Nibs, Theo Chocolate's Big Daddy s'more, Forte’s Lemon Pepper & White Chocolate, and Fresco’s Pure Chocolate Bar. Scoop them up before they’re gone.
The French patisserie has closed its location at the Fairmont Olympic Hotel, but will be opening an even bigger new location at 4th and Madison (where they’ve already opened a coffee cart). The new location is set to open March 15 and will feature weekend brunch.
Matt Lewis’s Restaurant Roux, the brick-and-mortar sibling to the Cajun-Creole food truck Where Ya At Matt, has decided to close. The website says, “We have loved serving y’all over the last 4+ years, but after some soul-searching we decided to accept an offer to sell Restaurant Roux.” Fear not, fans of jambalaya and beignets: the food truck and catering business are sticking around. Should you wish to pay your respects, you can join the restaurant for live music on Mardi Gras, and their final service will be brunch on Sunday, February 18.
For the second week of Burger Month, the featured special is the Osaka Burger from chef Shota Nakajima of Adana: "Painted Hills grass fed beef, miso aioli, karashi aioli, caramelized onions, shredded cabbage, Calbee chips, aonori seaweed sprinkled on top of a sunny side up egg." It's here until February 12.

Addo X Raised Doughnuts
The name of chef Mi Kim’s culty Raised Doughnuts pop-up refers not only to the yeasty, leavened properties of her wares, but also to her perpetual striving toward excellence: to “raise the doughnut bar” (her tagline). The former head pastry chef of Macrina Bakery has a brick-and-mortar store in the works, but for now you can catch her at this event at the former Crush space, where her new addictive mochi doughnuts (which just so happen to be gluten-free, not that you’d know it) will be served piping-hot out of the sizzling fryer. On the menu: plain and black-sesame glazed flavors, and one dunked in unctuous sweetened condensed milk. Wash them all down with a bottle of chef Eric Rivera’s cold brew soda, and you might just find yourself elevated to another plane.
