What better way to celebrate 4/20 than with a 40th anniversary screening of the classic Cheech & Chong film Up in Smoke?

This post is from 2018. Check out our current weed calendar here!

Pot dispensaries are open throughout the year, but 4/20 (Friday, April 20), the universal day for cannabis appreciation, is an extra special opportunity to wear your bud-loving heart on your sleeve. If you want to celebrate properly but are bored by the idea of getting stoned and watching Netflix on your couch, you're in luck. Below, we've compiled all the weed-centric things to do on the holiday and throughout the weekend, from a screening of Cheech and Chong's first stoner film, Up In Smoke, to a 4/20 Wellness Retreat Concert with Snoop Dogg, Migos, and Wiz Khalifa, and from Uncle Ike's For Stoners by Stoners 4/20 Party (complete with a petting zoo featuring a wallaby!) to a special edition of the Gateway Comedy Show. See them all below, and find even more events on our complete weed calendar.

FRIDAY

ART

420 Illustrations on 4/20
Spend 4/20 with the trippiest art in the city, Dave Calver's illustrations from his Limbo Lounge graphic novel, featuring "eye-popping surveillance worms and birds," vigilante nuns, and "flower-headed freaks."

COMEDY

The Dope Show
Tyler Smith presents the Dope Show, which offers two performances by a lineup of comedians: one delivered sober, then another delivered several (smoky) minutes later, totally baked.

An Evening with Kevin Smith
Enjoy an evening of slacker entertainment from Kevin Smith, director of Clerks I and II, Dogma, and other movies for stoned people.

The Gateway Show: 4/20
One: four comics on top of their mental game will do their sets. Two: these four comics get very, very stoned. Three: you watch the poor bastards attempt to tell more jokes while their brains swim around somewhere in the upper mesosphere. It's kind of like that experiment where they gave spiders THC and watched them make some pretty awful webs. Erin Ingle will host this special 4/20 edition with Ivan Decker, Maggie Maye, Myles Weber, and Rachel Walls.

Hot Sandwich: The Toasted Sub
This sketch comedy troupe suggests you inhale a little somethin'-somethin' before their show.

Jay and Silent Bob Get Old
Kevin Smith and Jason Mewes, the filmmakers behind the classic slacker comedy Clerks II and its sequels, will record an episode of their podcast Jay & Silent Bob Get Old live.

FILM

Mammoth Movie Night: Half Baked with Silver City
Join Mammoth for a viewing of the stoner cult-classic and a tap takeover with Silver City Brewing.

Puget Soundtrack: Afrocop Presents 'A Scanner Darkly'
It’s always a good idea to buy your tickets early to Puget Soundtrack, which matches a cult film with musicians about town to tease out new sensations and emotions from movies you thought you knew. Afrocop—a funk/fusion jazz trio with a penchant for abstract keyboard explorations and banging backbeats—seems like an inspired choice. About the film, the 2006 animated sci-fi thriller that’s based on a Philip K. Dick novel, Marc Savlov at the Austin Chronicle once wrote that it “seems almost tailor-made for the midnight movie/stoner audience, and I mean that in a good way”—so it should be the perfect fit for 4/20, even if our Charles Mudede did once pooh-pooh it for its “weak” substance.

Super Troopers 2 Opening
Jay Chandrasekhar (Crazy Ex-Girlfriend) is the mastermind behind this stoner comedy about a border dispute between the US and Canada and the Super Troopers’ special highway patrol within the disputed zone. We don't think the 4/20 release date is a coincidence.

Up in Smoke 40th Anniversary
Weed culture and low comedy can be nauseating bedfellows, but after 40 years, Cheech & Chong’s debut film, Up in Smoke, remains an indelible document of counterculture insinuating itself into the mainstream, one van made entirely out of “fiberweed” at a time. The film is gross, inappropriate, and in poor taste at every turn, but, as Harry says to Sergeant Stedenko at the crucial moment, sometimes you just need to “go with it.” PS: Yes, that is Tom Skerritt as Strawberry, and yes that is Strother Martin as Chong’s father, and yes those are proper LA punks/new wavers at the battle of the bands. Far out, man. SEAN NELSON

FOOD & DRINK

4/20 Triple IPA Fest
On the stoniest holiday of the year, taste "mega-dank, resinous" triple IPAs (which are extra-potent) and Ablis's non-alcoholic CBD drink. If you have the munchies, grab a basket of tater tots for $4.20.

Neon Taco Bell
In honor of the fast-food temple of stoners everywhere, Monica Dimas's counter inside Nacho Borracho will serve up their slightly more sophisticated take on Taco Bell classics, with items like crunch wrap supremes, Dorito nachos supreme, nacho cheese fries, "cinnamon crispas" (cinnamon sugar chips), and a Baja Blast-inspired agua fresca.

The Waldos' Special Ale Release 2018
Watch Wayne's World and bring something to tie-dye to celebrate the 4/20 release of the Waldos' "herbacious, botanical, dank, resinous" Special Ale.

GEEK

After Hours
Seattleites love drinking around science, and this event will give you party nerds your fix. Imbibe cocktails, play with VR, see live experiments, gawk in darkness at the Planetarium, encounter butterflies, and more—all in the blissful absence of those pesky kids. Plus, while this event's date may be a coincidence, it's a good 4/20 option, and the promotional description is full of stoner puns: They invite you to "End your work week on a high note" and "witness brilliant laser colors blazing overhead," they write that they'll be "keeping our arches lit," and they promise that "After-Hours will blow your mind as you soar with butterflies...and explore all things green with our educators from Mercer Slough Environmental Education Center in Bellevue."

Seagaze Kickoff: Appendixes, LUCKYANDLOVE, Tangients, Darkswoon, Todavia
Get ready for Seagaze by ramping up your energy with live sets by Appendixes, LUCKYANDLOVE, Tangients, Darkswoon, and Todavia. It could be a coincidence that the kick-off for a festival of hazey, gazey, psychedelic musical offerings happens on weed's best day, but we know better.

Sleepless 4/20: Ketafere, Guests

Whitney Mongé, Unite-One, Guests
Local alternative soul artist—and former Seattle busker—Whitney Mongé will fill your eardrums with a voice that Stranger contributor Andrew Hamlin called "understated but emphatic." She'll be joined by local reggae-hiphop fusion outfit Unite-One and DJ Loveward Steps, all of whom promise to dish out "classic stoner jams" in honor of 4/20. Plus, Orion Misciagna will provide live painting.

Wiz Khalifa
Since breaking through nationally in 2010 with the number-one hit “Black and Yellow,” which helped to propel his now-iconic Rolling Papers album to the top of the charts, Pittsburgh rapper Wiz Khalifa has been steadily rising as one of rap’s most notorious stoners. He even has his herbal regime fully sponsored by cannabis business the Cookie Company. Having scored smash hits in the past few years with “We Dem Boyz” and “See You Again,” Wiz will give the crowd plenty to rap along to, as well as the possibility of hearing new material off his long-delayed Rolling Papers 2 album. That this show falls on that holiest of stoner holidays means that attendees will be in for a very special 4/20. NICK ZURKO
