Seattleites love their ice cream and their coffee, so it's only natural to combine the two. Affogato, the classic Italian dessert with espresso poured over gelato or ice cream, is the answer. Bonus: since it pairs cold scoops with steaming espresso, it's also an ideal vehicle for ice cream on these transitional days between summer and fall (not to mention a great pick-me-up). Below, we've collected a list of places where you can locate the caffeine-laced treat. For more delicious things to eat and drink, check out our full food and drink calendar, or our list of September food & drink specials.
D’Ambrosio Gelateria Artiginiale
This Ballard gelateria recently rolled out a new affogato menu, with five options: Il Bronte (pistachio gelato, espresso, whipped cream, and crushed pistachios), Salted Caramel Affogato (salted caramel gelato, espresso, whipped cream, caramel, and Maldon sea salt), Ca Phe Da (a Vietnamese coffee-inspired affogato with coconut gelato, espresso, infused condensed milk, caramel, and whipped cream), the Zenzero (lime sorbetto, Rachel's Ginger Beer, lime, whipped cream), and the Matcha Menta (mint chip gelato, matcha latte pour-over, whipped cream, and chocolate sauce). Or get your choice of gelato with one topping and espresso. You can also find D'ambrosio's gelato in an affogato at Celine Patisserie.
Molly Moon's Ice Cream
Though it's not an affogato so much as another delicious coffee-and-ice-cream beverage, today, Thursday, September 13, is the last day to grab the local ice cream shop's Union Coffee cold brew float, created to celebrate their newly minted partnership with Union Coffee: a scoop of Union Coffee ice cream with a splash of soda water and garnished with chocolate sprinkles (available at all Molly Moon's locations except Madrona).
Starbucks Reserve Roastery
The massive Starbucks Reserve Roastery makes two kinds of affogato with two shots of Starbucks Reserve espresso poured over a scoop of local Mora Iced Creamery ice cream: the House Affogato, with "a touch of demerera syrup and a dusting of cinnamon," and the Shakerato Affogato, made with Reserve espresso shots shaken with ice until frothy, poured over ice cream, and finished with vanilla syrup and a sprig of mint.
Shug's Soda Fountain
The retro Pike Place soda fountain and ice cream shop offers classic affogato with a shot of espresso, "decidedly chocolate ice cream," and whipped cream—spike it with Frangelico, Bailey's, or Kahlua for extra decadence. There's also a menu of options sans espresso: Frangelico Noisette Liqueur with pecan praline ice cream and a waffle cookie; Bailey's Irish Cream with coffee ice cream, chocolate bitters, whipped cream, and chocolate powder; Kahlua Coffee Liqueur with coconut ice cream, house-made caramel sauce, and toasted coconut; Alvear Solera with chocolate, "raisiny fruit and cinnamon" dessert wine and vanilla ice cream; London Fog Latte with vanilla ice cream, Earl Grey tea, steamed milk, and cardamom bitters; and Masala Chai Tea with cinnamon ice cream and whipped cream.
