DIVERSIONS

FRIDAY 9/1

THE STAR SHOW--"I spy with my little eye, Andromeda, Sirius, and Delphinus." And maybe you will too when you go to the Willard Smith Planetarium to witness "The Star Show." Although Delphinus doesn't even come close to resembling any sort of dolphin-like creature, it's definitely interesting to see what creations people contrived just by connecting the stars way back when there was no television. Or you could just go there to make out with your date like they did on The Wonder Years. Willard Smith Planetarium at the Pacific Science Center. Daily at 3, 4, and 7 pm through Sept 4; $7.50 for adults (14-64), $5.50 for juniors (3-13) and seniors (65+), and free for children under three.

SATURDAY 9/2

DRAGON BOAT FESTIVAL--Here's something different to do this Labor Day weekend if the crowds and annoying tourists have gotten the best of you at past Bumbershoot festivals. Head over to Seward Park and watch the colorful and elaborate Dragon Boat Races. Each holding 22 crew members (including 20 paddlers, a drummer, and a "driver"), these boats have been transformed into large, intricate dragons with brightly colored heads at the bow and tails at the stern. Though if you were to visit this event, you'd probably miss Jim Carroll on the Interview Stage at Bumbershoot. I'm not sure you'd want to risk it. Seward Park on Lake Washington. Park is open from 9 am-5 pm. Free.

SUNDAY 9/3

DRAGONS OF KOMODO--Keeping with the theme of dragons this weekend is a new exhibit at the Woodland Park Zoo. The "Dragons of Komodo" features creatures that can run as fast as a dog, kill a human with deadly bacteria in their mouths, and eat up to 80 percent of their body weight in food. Be sure to keep your arms to your side and don't lean over the rail, because if they get you, you're gone. Or, hey, maybe if they eat an annoying little brother, you'll get free zoo admission for a year. It's potentially a win-win situation. Woodland Park Zoo, 5500 Phinney Ave N, 684-4800. Daily 9:30 am-6 pm; adults $8, seniors/students $7.25, youth $5.75, children (3-5) $3.75, toddlers (0-2) are free.

MONDAY 9/4

DON'T WORK--Being that it is Labor Day and all, I insist that you DO NOT work. DO NOT partake in any activity that could be defined as work. Do not do the dishes, do not pay the bills, do not do any laundry. Don't even try to sneak into work for a few hours to "catch up." You can skip it all for one day. Go see Juno and Death Cab for Cutie at Bumbershoot (1-2 pm and 3:30-4:30 pm, respectively, at the Bumberclub). I will be there, and you better be there too. Then, lie out in the sun. Play tennis. Read a good book. Do something fun. But whatever you do, DO NOT WORK!
