No one is "being forced to paint the same thing over and over and over by this small market, forced to do a certain thing because that's what the people want". We may feel like we are but it would be better to say we are forced to paint the same thing over and over because that's what we think the people want. I think if you focus on painting what you think is aesthetically appealing and represent ideas you think should be expressed you will find that people will resonate with it more than if you get stuck replicating what has been successful in the past.

In order to be successful artists need to sell their artwork.Actually the public(viewers)doesn't have any responsibility to support artists.Art itself needs to have subjects, emotion, style, and that's what art buyers are looking for.

I want to clarify a few things--first of all--the true heroes behind the Hive Seattle Show are Zachary Sofia and Nathan Cartwright. Zachary Sofia has worked for over two years to bring Nathan Cartwright's Hive Gallery Studios to Seattle and this show would never have come together without his unique talents for bringing wonderful alternative artists and galleries together.

We just got finished hanging the show and it is gorgeous--absolutely gorgeous! Just waiting for the Chet Zar and Yoko D'Holbachie pieces to come in by plane! This really includes the most amazing group of talented Seattle artists and California artists in one location.

Secondly--I want to say that in the above article, at times I spoke absolutely inelegantly--what I meant to say is really simple--I truly believe that Seattle has the most amazing group of young artists of all stripes--and I am absolutely proud to be friends with, to interview many and to show alongside the rest of you. To those of you who do not make art, but have always wanted to be part of something magical--go out, go to the openings, the cafes, the small spaces and ad hoc happenings and support these young women and men--they are doing some of the most amazing work--you will not be sorry. And yes, every one of them is doing the best work of their lives--and I am proud to know these artists.

Peace. Xavier-

All artists are making the best work of their lives. It's part of what defines us as artists. Every time an artist decides to make work he is making a conscious effort to better understand the nature of being. The art he makes today could not have been made yesterday. It is inherently valuable to the artist's journey. This remains true whether others deem it important or not. Mainstream art may not be your cup of tea but it doesn't give you the right to dismiss mainstream galleries and their artists as vacuous sellouts. Especially if you want that level of success for your artists.
