Phyllis Hatfield's premise for her new project, Fell From the Sky, is simple: She's giving seven King County artists $2,000 per year for three years (2015-2017)—and these are gifts, not grants, so the artists don't have to declare them on taxes, and Hatfield herself takes no deduction.
The artists are people "whose work as mothers has potentially stymied their work as artists. This project recognizes the challenging balancing act of making art and supporting children."
I'm sure there are people who will take issue with this, and I don't even want to spend time imagining their reasons.
I just want to say: Yeah. Go Phyllis Hatfield. And congratulations to the seven artists selected, after a nomination and vetting process: Gala Bent, Kamla Kakaria, Jennifer Loomis, Erika Loreano, Rainbow-Renee Manier, Tracy Rector, and Thuy-Van Vu.
