Bremerton is still largely undiscovered by Seattle hipsters, but it is definitely one of the best Seattle exurbs for people that can’t or don’t want to pay Seattle housing prices. There is a solid art community there for this reason. For the price of a Seattle apartment, you can pay a mortgage note.
With the fast ferry, you can get there in 30 minutes—which a shorter trip than a bus ride to Ballard or West Seattle from downtown—and when you arrive, the downtown area feels like White Center or other emergent Seattle neighborhoods. There are barcades, dive bars, art galleries, yoga studios, and craft cocktails. There is still enough of a scuzzy vibe to make Capitol Hill peeps feel at home, though. (Well, Capitol Hill peeps that remember what the hill was like before Amazon.)
It’s honestly pretty awesome. I expect it to be gentrified to the hilt in the near future. People are very friendly, which can be disconcerting to Seattleites, so fair warning.
