Where is this stuff? Why isn't it more widely known about? Where can we see it? Can we see it? Why is it all stuck in a basement? Why have I never heard of this guy before?
Lots of questions..
Thank you so much for this very nice overview of Wilfred and his
marvelous Lumia art - you verbalized Lumia well!
A few clarifying comments:
1. Wilfred forbade filming his work because the quality was so poor at
the time - the results did his art an injustice. Today, because
of AJ's steadily improving recording results, I think Wilfred would approve -
although the sublime, exquisite beauty of his work can still be fully
experienced only in person.
2. This reality explains [at least partially] why Wilfred is so little
known - there are so few of his works extant - and most are in storage -
so there are simply very few opportunities to see his work. [AJ and I do
lend from our collections for public exhibitions when appropriate opportunities arise.]
Another reason: Wilfred produced so few recorded permanent works -
he worked at a slow pace. Thus there wasn't much "merchandise"
available to make it worth an art dealer's time & effort to promote him.
3. Wilfred crafted his works quite carefully and deliberately - he did not simply assemble "found" objects and random shards of colored glass.
4. This article is historic - it is the first time there has appeared
in print the Donna Stein/Eugene Epstein 1964 blind date matter, which
subsequently, through Donna's initiative, has turned out to be so
important to Wilfred's legacy!
