There's a Right Reason to Love Picasso, and to Cry Over the 2010 Arts Innovator Awards

WRONG,WRONG, WRONG, AGAIN MISS GRAVES!!! GET OFF YOUR F&%#ING HIGH HORSE AND GET REAL! WHO CARES WHO YOU THINK SHOULD GET THE AWARD? FIND SOMETHING NICE TO SAY (LIKE CONGRATULATIONS?)! YOU ALWAYS HAVE THAT AMATEUR DELIVERY OF QUALIFYING ALL YOUR AESTHETICS WITH SUCH IGNORANT CONVICTION AND POMPOSITY WHILE PULLING OUT THE OLDEST TRICK IN THE BOOK: TEARING EVERYONE ELSE DOWN AROUND YOU TO ELEVATE YOUR SELF! I WOULDN'T HAVE NECESSARILY CHOSEN THEM EITHER BUT COME ON...

SHOW SOME RESPECT!!!

Here here on the respect front. As you have some interesting opinions Hibrow, who would be on your list for this award?
3
All shall tremble before Highbrow's mighty all-caps key!

Jen,
Your criticism of the award recipients shows your lack respect for art and artists. A critique of exhibited work is fine and needed in this community. Dissing judges (and the recipients) for their choices adds nothing worthwhile to the creative discourse.

"there's nothing innovative about making abstract paintings based on the observation of nature"

Really? One could argue that all art is an abstraction of nature, discounting Berk's work based on that logic is faulty at best. One of your apparent fave's artwork, Susan Robb's black tubes are an obvious abstraction of nature. Ditto, Implied Violence's performances, abstracting human nature.

I congratulate any artist that receives money to keep going, the award is a great addition to the underfunded art world. I may hate Chilhuly's work but I'm glad he is finally giving back to the community in a more meaningful way than a glass bridge.

Never really thought about Picasso's ability to acknowledge multiple view points. Thanks Jen. Hibrow- more of your BS, how consistent.
6
Just as we thought Hibrow - you can't back up your rants with any insightful thoughts/offers of your own.

Hibrow needs to change his totem animal to "chickensh#t"

RIGHT, RIGHT, RIGHT, 'artistx' (see unregistered comments) WELL SAID!!!
couldn't have said it better myself!
Hibrow
ps

...and PUHLEEZ-I wasn' t born yesterday...

Not to be too snarky (albeit seemingly fitting for this column), but seriously? To quote: "an award is only as good as its recipients, and the recipients are only as good as the panelists"

Does this logic also apply to your own views and criticisms Jen? Is a particular work of "art" only as good as its critic, and is the critic only as good as their ability to provoke thoughtful and sustained commentary on art and the artistic process? If that logic holds, then the reviews I'm seeing here are devastatingly unimpressive. Something to think about.

ALL HAIL 'peer_reviewed'! Thank you, thank you. You said it SO WELL and SO INTELLIGENTLY! Come on people of the Seattle art community-start the conversation and hold her divisive and prickly ways accountable. How many of you artists, patrons, and gallery owners has she s%#t all over in her cruel and unfair opining? Where are Margie Livingston's, Dale Chihuly's, and Leo Berk's fans and friends standing up against her for the rotten things she said to ruin their party. It's like we're seeing "Mean Girls 2: the NW art story" starring Jen Graves. More damage is being done to our broken art community than we should be willing to accept-get into the discourse. And to Jen Graves I'll say it again...
RESPECT.

Jen,

It is natural and reasonable to question the process and the ultimate decision. However, I believe your rash judgments seem more like emotional outbursts than constructive criticisms, and I think it was in poor taste to belittle the winners and to insult the panelists since you can't possibly know what they learned during the extensive selection process.

I imagine we both would have come up with a very different list of finalists and winners than the one this panel selected... but we weren't on the panel.

We didn't see the complete list of nominated artists or know which of those nominated artists decided to submit the full application. We didn't get to review those applications or take part in the interviews & studio visits. We weren't part of the deliberation process that must have gone on between the 5 very qualified arts professionals that were on this diverse panel.

Who knows, if we went through this process maybe we would have ended up with a similar list of finalists and winners?

I am happy for these artists and thankful to Artist Trust and the Dale and Leslie Chihuly Foundation for creating this award.
