In our June 6 print edition of The Stranger, we published this sentence in the ICYMI column on our Fortnight page (it's a print-edition-only column, so you'll have to find the paper to read it):

At least six white people with dreadlocks were spotted at the free, outdoor Northwest Folklife Festival, committing the twin sins of cultural appropriation and fugly hair.

A reader responded:

Why the nasty comment about white folks with dreadlocks????? This country is supposed to be a melting pot of cultural crossover. Below is a picture of my Mom looking happy and sassy on dreads done by caregivers who happen to be from Africa. I love her in dreads! Defy anyone who judges them fugly and considers this style for white folks inappropriate. Bad Stranger for adopting Seattle snotty attitude!!!!

Why the nasty comment about white folks with dreadlocks?????

We wrote back:

I believe these are technically cornrows.

Reader:

I stand corrected that Mom has cornrows but my response stands.
