We got a press release last night from University Book Store. I’m not generally in the habit of running press releases whole, but this is a nice one, and it should serve to remind everybody that we have a lot of great independent bookstores in town besides the one that everybody’s talking about right now:

In celebration of the 110 years of University Book Store’s local independent bookselling, 110 local authors contribute original works consisting of 110 words compiled into a special volume entitled 110/110. The book includes short fiction, poetry, non-fiction, memoirs, and personal memories of University Book Store from Ivan Doig, Tom Robbins, Garth Stein, Mary Daheim, Stephanie Kallos, David Guterson, Jonathan Evison, Justina Chen, Deb Colletti, Jim Woodring, Stacey Levine, Wesley Stace, Jennie Shortridge, David Lasky, Ryan Boudinot, Colleen McElroy, David Waggoner, Lisa Lutz, David Montgomery, Paul Dorpat and more. The collection is free with purchase of one of the contributing authors’ books while supplies last. Our U District store will host a reception for the public on our 110th birthday, January 10, 2010. Customers are invited to stop in and enjoy a slice of birthday cake and raise a glass of sparkling cider to help us celebrate.

I’ll be writing more about this in the days to come, of course; I can’t wait to get my hands on this book.

And one more time: Make sure you visit your local independent bookstore and buy some Christmas gifts there. Most of them do free gift-wrapping. The only caveat I have to add is that if you’re going to a smaller bookstore (Fremont Place Books, Queen Anne Books, Ravenna Third Place) and you’re looking for a particular title, it’s always a good idea to call first and make sure they have it. Smaller bookstores necessarily can’t have every title in the world. But they’d love to recommend books for you and those hard-to-buy-for relatives, and indie bookstore recommendations are always better than Amazon’s.

  4. @4 – they can’t be older than John McCain.

When John was a boy, he fought the devil, and the devil gave up cause John was old as sin then.
