Restaurant Details

  • Toyoda is the hidden gem of Lake City; its existence is a well-kept secret, spread mostly by word of mouth. The fish is unbelievably fresh and creamy: For whole seconds, it is impossible to focus on anything except this heavenly taste, as if you have just seen the Holy Virgin outlined on a piece of pickled ginger. You will feel capable of such a vision.

Toyoda has changed and not for the better

Toyoda used to be one of my favorite restaurants, but then they changed. The prices went up, the quality of the food went way down and the service is not as good as it used to be. We tried it a couple of times after the menu change to see if it was a fluke, but it is not good anymore. It makes me sad.

Top Notch

High quality, great service. Come a few times and bring others with you, and you'll be treated like a god.

Excellent

Toyoda's best place to eat in the area. The main courses are just fine, but the sushi is what you're there for.

Great service, too. You are immediately presented with udon and miso soup when you sit down. They clear the table promptly between courses. The staff is attentive but not too hover-y.

On Mother's Day, they gave me a warm, delicious slice of chocolate cake covered in hot chocolate sauce, fresh whipped cream, and strawberries; free of charge. Just "Happy Mother's Day. Have some awesome cake."

I love Toyoda.

truly second rate sushi

Toyoda has an extremely loyal following... why is a complete and utter mystery. Although the service is fine, in a friendly, informal, neighborhood sort of way, the food is generally made without any attention to detail, Simple dishes like teriyaki often come out overcooked with a sickly sweet teriyaki sauce, each meal starts with a weird 'salad' consisting of overcooked spaghetti overdressed in mayonnaise and mirin with krab, and fried items more often than not taste of slightly rancid grease. But the sushi is what is truly insulting. Not that the quality of the fish is bad, (it is generally reliably fresh), but the knife skills and presentation is simply appalling. Sashimi platters consist of irregularly shaped chunks of fish thrown without thought or care on the plate, and nigiri is misshapen and haphazard. I have never eaten a piece of tuna here that was cut correctly - it is always cut with the grain instead of against it, making it impossible to bite through. I have lived in Lake City for 13 years, and I have tried Toyoda several times, hoping they will win me over, but I have given up. Thumbs down. Way down.

Not for You

If you're not already a regular, please don't come here. Its crowded enough, there isn't a waiting area to speak of, i don't want it to change. Ever.
