They're throwing a few dollars away on fuel to fly it on this little stunt: https://twitter.com/EverettHerald/status…

If only someone at WSDOT could have given WSDOT a map of the things WSDOT left behind that might be in the TBM's path when WSDOT started this tunneling endeavor!

@7 You're right, the public sector has never been able to provide decent internet infrastructure.

@13 So much this. It was jaw-dropping how readily the local and national media (and SLOG!) ate this up, with each readily replaying the exact same Amazon-provided video clip, which basically amounted to a giant free advertisement both for Amazon and for its Prime program. Bezos goes on 60 Minutes on Sunday evening and drops this bombshell so everyone is thinking about it as they return to work on Monday and start shopping, and then the rest of the media wagged their tails and followed suit. P.T. Barnum would be pleased.

One sketchy thing I notice right off the bat is that they're only doing this if you go to smile.amazon.com each time you make a purchase. So even after you register and select a charity, if you forget to go to that specific URL your charity won't be receiving any funds. I'm sure they're banking on a lot of goodwill and positive press from this announcement, followed by most people forgetting to enter that special URL each time they shop. If Amazon was serious about getting into customer-driven charitable giving, they wouldn't be adding these unnecessary extra hoops to jump through and remember forever.

@2 As far as I can tell from reading their PR on this, the 0.5% is coming out of Amazon's revenue on the sale, unlike the Safeway "donate a dollar to charity" scheme and other "round-up" dealies. Of course, whether that means that Amazon is just going to quietly raise their prices by the equivalent amount in the long-term remains to be seen, but for now they're claiming it as a way to start doing charitable giving but with the customers driving the choice of charity rather than someone in Amazon's executive office.

@1,@3 - Vischeck (http://www.vischeck.com/) is a godsend for checking these sorts of issues, but convincing the scientific world to shift away from red-green (especially on microarray data) is a Sisyphean task.

Goldy -- for TPM and other sites that you visit frequently, it's easy to create a wee bit of custom CSS (at least in Chrome and Firefox) that underlines or changes the color of links... doesn't fix the problem for everyone, but at least would make things better for you.

@37 I'm disappointed -- the SPOG lickspittles usually show up a lot more quickly when something gets posted on here about SPD. Been too busy rubbing one out to the video to post a comment?

I assume this means they don't cater to any of those other evil non-Christian holidays like Halloween, right?

Lady, I've got some news for you. If you're going to be "deep into your 30s" in less than two years [300 sandwiches / (3 sandwiches/week * 52 weeks/year)], then it might already be time to reconsider the order of "engagement > marriage > babies".
