Jul 7, 2015 Sandman commented on Duwamish Tribe Vows to Keep Fighting for Recognition, Despite Last Week's Decision.
@2 is right. Muckleshoot, Suquamish and Tulalip see Duwamish as an indistinct sub-entity of their tribes and see the split of their tribes as a creation of whites who divided Indians into fishing and farming tribes based on arbitrary reasoning. Establishment of a Duwamish tribe now would muddy tribal fishing rights in Elliott Bay which currently are granted to Muckleshoot and Suquamish. The problem is less racism today than it is how to equitably undo racist divisions created 150 years ago.

Those aren't townhouses in the photo. Those are row houses, which in my mind are a preferred alternate.

Hooray, Sally Bagshaw! This is the first time since the start of the 10-year plan that someone has come forward with real $s and ideas to improve the shelter system.
Oct 25, 2014 Sandman commented on Vote "NO" on Initiative 591, Because It Aims to Keep the Gun Show Loophole Wide Open.
Note that the pro-gun arguments are always anti-594 and very seldom pro-591. Even the NRA has refused to endorse I-591. If the anti-594 arguments seem twisted, just wait until you ask a pro-gun advocate to make some pro-591 arguments. The two parts of I-591 are a) national standard for background checks, and b) no gun confiscation w/o due process. Argument "a" is hotly disliked by states' rights people. Argument "b" is recognized as simply being a shiny object to draw votes. On I-591 there's no "there" there, except as a stalking horse to defeat I-594.

Granted, we wouldn't have seen this video without his smartphone camera, but judging by the camera man's size and fitness level, not to mention that of his brother, why did they leave it to the other, chubbier guys to take this fellow down? Basically, they just stood there watching/taping while this whole scary scene took place.

@6 and @7 -- You (and WACOPS) might want to read I-594 before you jump to hasty conclusions. It specifically exempts transfers in cases like you describe. But let me summarize your argument: "I don't care how many lives this law would save, but if it inconveniences me in any way I'm voting against it." Thanks a bunch!

Great ad. I love it! It's about time someone shared facts with people in our state. I hope the ad buy is big . . . bigger than the NRA and its cronies can muster.

Awesome article. Thanks to Zach and the great people at Washington Alliance for Gun Responsibility for giving us some hope in the midst of all this sadness.

Brilliant article, Cheryl Stumbo. You are indeed an inspiration to us all. Yes, I-594 will not stop all mass murders, but yes, I-594 is the first step to taking on the gun lobby. Once it passes we will see an end to its aura of invincibility. Thank you for being the initiative's citizen sponsor, Cheryl. You rock!
Jan 21, 2014 Sandman commented on SL Letter of the Day: The Cool Dad Option.
Everyone seems to assume the weight gain of the wife is the result of the pregnancy. The letter doesn't actually say that. It says she's overweight, and recently had a baby. And the signature suggests the wife is almost twice as heavy as when he married her. Let's assume instead that they've been married for years. She gained lots of weight. He impregnated her. She had a baby (and now, granted, weighs even more) and all that weight has become too much for him. That doesn't excuse the two stupid options he gives, but it does make him look slightly less of a jerk.
