Jan 7, 2014 Lumpmoose commented on What Do You Think of the Oklahoma Satanist Statue?.
This is a fantastic idea. The whole point is: "No religious icons funded by the government should be put on public property." Defenders of the First Amendment want them to remove everything to keep government services secular. A big-ass Satan statue will drive that point home even faster.

Let Fox News crusade. Their position is so illogical if you just think about it for a minute that their crusade will fall flat. They'd be forced to argue that Satanists aren't allowed First Amendment rights on par with Christians.

I skimmed the article and didn't see any comment on the fact that the US is REALLY FREAKING BIG, especially when compared to any other individual industrialized nation with fast broadband. Comparing the economics of laying fiber across the US vs. Latvia is very simplistic when you don't account for density and total geography.

Perhaps comparing the EU as an entity vs. the US would be closer but they're not doing that in the article.

Nov 19, 2013 Lumpmoose commented on Fox News Outraged That Costco Labeled the Bible as Fiction.
Costco has tweeted @toddstarnes multiple times since yesterday that the sticker in the picture is on top of another sticker and the SKU is for Canterbury stories, not the bible:… So presumably it's a misplaced sticker, not a reclassification of the Bible. Todd Starnes hasn't replied or revised of course, because he's a professional.

@22 Interesting side note on conservatives using Rockwell as a blueprint for society: Rockwell's friend and chief inspiration was J.C. Leyendecker, a gay man who lived with his partner for almost 40 years. Rockwell said, "I began working for ‘The Saturday Evening Post’ in 1916 and Leyendecker was my god. I actually used to, unbeknownst to him, follow him down the streets of New Rochelle, just to be close to him." They were friends for over 25 years, so Rockwell had to know about Leyendecker's relationship.

It just goes to show that perhaps Rockwell wasn't the social conservative that right wingers try to claim.

@28 That's usually true but when the argument comes from a place of bigotry and intimidation, an otherwise open-minded community can get alarmed by anonymity. That's why the argument doesn't make sense: it's designed to belittle based on minority status, not discuss.

I wonder if Rouhani tweeting kind words to Jews is about as well-received to Iranian clerics as the Pope speaking kind words to gays is to the American Catholic hierarchy.

Congrats, Seattle. We're trying to get more cycle tracks built in Minneapolis on roads planned for reconstruction and it's like pulling teeth.
Sep 12, 2013 Lumpmoose commented on KING 5 Is Expanding Its Local News Coverage. Will It Be Any Better Than the Old Coverage?.
Buy several yachts? I know TV stations have certain requirements due to their use of public airwaves, but as long as they meet those, why would they care about the public good? They're a business and the guilt method of whining isn't going to change their mission for money. If you want to force local stations to carry certain programming, do it through laws. Otherwise they are going to air whatever brings in the most ad revenue while still meeting minimum legal requirements.

@24 - Manning's document dump didn't "serve" anyone and lacked all discretion and editorial sense. Her wanton disregard for fellow service members and civilians in foreign service isn't in the same league as principled whistleblowers like Ellsberg, Felt and even Snowden. She's an embarrassment to the military and to the LGBT community.
