THURSDAY JUNE 20

SEATTLE SYMPHONY

Pianist Horacio Gutiérrez joins Gerry Schwarz and the SSO for Brahms' Piano Concerto No. 1. The Northwest Boychoir and Girlchoir chime in for the premiere of Daniel Brewbaker's Fields of Vision, and Panufnik's Sinfonia Sacra rounds out the program. The pre-concert lecture by Glen Danielson, "Symphonic Visions from Hymn and Poem," begins one hour prior to the performance. Also June 21 at 8 pm and June 23 at 2 pm. Benaroya Hall, 200 University St, 215-4747, 7:30 pm, $11-$71.

FRIDAY JUNE 21

GARTH KNOX

As Knox's solo viola CD, Works for Solo Viola (Montaigne) remains the vade mecum of contemporary viola composition, new music nuts should drool over this one. Beloved for his work with the Arditti Quartet, this virtuoso violist performs music by Karpen, Thome, and Penderecki as well as Salvatore Sciarrino's masterpiece, Three Brilliant Nocturnes. The afternoon time is not a misprint, but the by-product of conference planning. Grrrrr. Brechemin Auditorium, UW campus, 685-8384, 1 pm, $15.

KUDZU

No matter how many times I crack open the dictionary, I never remember that kudzu is a hairy flowering vine, so thanks to the press release for this show, I do now. For keyboardist Wayne Horvitz, Kudzu is a chance to round up the usual suspects (Tucker Martine, Reggie Watts, PK, et al.) and an old comrade from NYC, Bobby Previte, to cook up a stew of electric jazz. Now, if only someone would christen a group Adumbrate. I-Spy, 1921 Fourth Ave (alley entrance), 374-9492, 10 pm, $12.

SUNDAY JUNE 23

JASON ROEBKE/SUZIE KOZAWA

What is it with Polestar and bassists? Chicago bassist Jason Roebke blows into town for a solo performance. Opening the show is the seldom-heard Suzie Kozawa, who makes playful experimental music from toys, dried kelp, and other neat stuff. Polestar Music Gallery, 1412 18th Avenue at E Union, 329-4224, 8 pm $8.

MONDAY JUNE 24

LOS HOMBRES CALIENTES

Sorry, it's not the Miami offshoot of Pansy Division, but a smokin' Latin jazz group from New Orleans. This sextet features musicologist and percussion master Bill Summers, veteran of Herbie Hancock's early '70s Headhunters and lynchpin of the Hancock-less but confusingly titled cult jazz-funk LP Headhunters, whose leadoff track, "God Make Me Funky," has been sampled by everyone, including me. Jazz Alley, 2033 Sixth Ave, 441-9729, 8 pm, $17.50/$19.50.

TUESDAY JUNE 25

BEBOP AND DESTRUCTION

This groove-laden jazz combo plays very little bebop and doesn't do much destruction, but you can expect plenty of affable playing and interesting solos. Owl 'N' Thistle, 808 Post Ave, 621-7777, 9 pm, free.
