FRIDAY MARCH 14

UW CHORUSES & SYMPHONY

For a Mozart masterpiece on the cheap, this is the gig for you. Along with the UW Symphony, just about every chorister on campus has been enlisted for Mozart's Requiem. Mozart composed this masterpiece on his deathbed, just as he was getting good. One of the gems of early 20th- century neoclassicism, Prokofiev's Classical Symphony, and conductor Abraham Kaplan's own Songs of Love and Praise round out the program. Meany Theater, UW Campus, 543-4880, 7:30 pm, $5/$8.

JEFF GREINKE & ROB ANGUS

Composer and sound sculptor Jeff Greinke joins longtime collaborator Rob Angus for an evening of intelligent, electro-ambient soundscapes. Polestar Music Gallery, 1412 18th Ave at E Union, 329-4224, 8 pm, $6.

SUNDAY MARCH 16

NEW MUSIC FROM INDIANA

Here's my nominee for sleeper gig of the week. The Indiana University New Music Ensemble, led by David Dzubay, performs music by a slew of unfamiliar (to me) Indiana composers: Derek Johnson, Don Freund, David Dzubay, and Eugene O'Brien. Additionally, these musical Hoosiers tackle Thalleïn, a ferociously heroic piece by one of the indisputable giants of 20th-century music, Iannis Xenakis. IU didn't treat Xenakis too well during his sojourn there in the early 1970s, so I'm glad a new generation of musicians seems eager to make amends. Recital Hall at Benaroya, Third & Union, 292-2787, 2 pm, $5/$15.

ORGANUM SOLUS

A heavy title like Organum Solus evokes dour monks chanting in brown robes or a grim-visaged black-metal group rumbling in the nether sub-basement of the Vogue. Happily, it's an avant-jazz solo piano gig with Craig Hoyer, Gust Burns, and Wayne Horvitz, who hasn't played a solo piano gig in town since I had blue dreadlocks. CoCA, 1420 11th Ave, 728-1980, 4 pm, $8-20 sliding-scale donation.

ANDY CHISLETT

Local pianist and organist plays music by Liszt, Gershwin, Debussy, and others. David Lines joins Chislett for an organ/piano duet. All Pilgrims Christian Church, Broadway E & E Republican St, 324-3900, 7:30 pm, $10 donation or pay as able.

MONDAY MARCH 17

CRAIG SHEPPARD

Craig Sheppard, UW faculty member and pianist, scales one of the summits of piano literature: Beethoven's piano sonatas. In this, the second of seven concerts to be presented in the coming year, Sheppard takes listeners on a chronological journey through Beethoven's piano sonatas, including the sonatas op. 10, nos. 1, 2, and 3, and op. 49, nos. 1 and 2. The big hit on the program is the C minor "Pathetique" sonata, which still dazzles to this day. Brechemin Auditorium, UW campus, 543-4880, 7:30 pm, $8/$10.

WEDNESDAY MARCH 19

PK & WHAT ARMY?

Bassist PK, stalwart member of the jazzy groove trio Rockin' Teenage Combo, has drafted an all-star cast for his What Army?, which includes Amy Denio (accordion, vocals, saxophone), Sue Orfield (saxophone), and Dave Carter (trumpet). Expect funky good straight-ahead tunes laced with a few agile avant curveballs. Owl 'N' Thistle, 808 Post Alley, 621-7777, 10 pm, free.
