THE BAD PLUS
Want to become the current critical darling of jazz scribes across the land? Sell truckloads of records and grab the rungs of crossover success: major label distribution, crafty arrangements, propulsive percussion, and unlikely tunes (like smart covers of "Smells Like Teen Spirit" and "Velouria"). The Bad Plus are doing it, and maybe you can too. The Triple Door, 216 Union St, 838-4333, 7:30 pm, $25.
SEATTLE SYMPHONY
Schwarz & Co. excel at Mahler (this time, it's the not-so-massive Symphony No. 5) and keep things crisp for Haydn's Symphony No. 100, nicknamed the "Military." The 30-minute pre-concert talk, "Mahler's Fifth and the Journey from Death to Life," starts one hour prior to the performance. Also Sat June 26 at 8 pm and Sun June 27 at 2 pm. Benaroya Hall, Third Ave and Union St, 215-4747, 7:30 pm, $12-$80.
FRIDAY JUNE 25

Margriet Tindemans (bowed strings), Shira Kammen (bowed strings, harp), and Mark Rimple (plectrum lute, voice) perform music from the 14th century: Ars Subtilior, The Cantigas de Santa Maria, and other repertoire from this rich period. University Christian Church, 4731 15th Ave NE, 325-7066, 8 pm, free-will donation.
VANCOUVER INTERNATIONAL JAZZ FESTIVAL
If you can't wait for Earshot's Jazz Festival this fall, consider trekking north for this festival laden with heavies and leavened with promising newcomers. Performers include Kurt Elling, Brad Mehldau, Joey DeFrancesco, Joe Lovano, and William Parker. Through Sun July 4. Various venues, check www.coastaljazz.ca for details, $10-$80.
SATURDAY JUNE 26
LOONEY, SMITH & DuROCHE
Bay Area-based pianist Scott Looney joins bassist Damon Smith and Portland's Tim DuRoche for an evening of freely improvised music. I saw DuRoche with Humph at the Open Music Workshop festival a few months ago and marveled at how he treated his drum kit (augmented with lots of little toys and objects) as a playful laboratory. Creating new sounds and rhythmic juxtapositions during the entire set, DuRoche thwapped his cymbals with towels, jabbed the drumheads with unusual sticks, and did too many other marvelous things to list here. Polestar Music Gallery, 1412 18th Ave at E Union St, 329-4224, 8 pm, $7.

JIM CUTLER JAZZ ORCHESTRA
For big band jazz on a budget, go hear this group. Led by saxophonist Jim Cutler, this outfit plays old chestnuts, new charts, and an experimental number or two. Sit close and peer into the overlooked world of an orchestra: trumpeters in back whispering, inscrutable hand signals from the leader, and the appreciative looks from fellow musicians when someone unfurls a smokin' solo. Tula's, 2214 Second Ave, 443-4221, 8 pm, $5.
MONDAY JUNE 28
SOUND OF THE UNDERBRUSH
Three sets of improvised music, the first two with percussionist and phonographer Marco Fernandes solo and duo with guitar saboteur Bill Horist. The final set features percussionist Jacopo Andreini, Olympia Experimental Music Festival honcho Arrington de Dionyso, and reedman Scott Rosenberg. Polestar Music Gallery, 1412 18th Ave at E Union St, 329-4224, 8 pm, donation requested
