In honor of the release of Tumble Bee, Laura Veirs's album for kids and adults, I tried to sit down with my niece Tess (5 years old) and nephew Eamon (3 years old) to see what they thought of it.

Eamon, do you remember the music that Mom and Dad played in the car for you?

You going to stay here. Me go upstairs. [Returns wearing sister's princess-costume high heels, picks up plastic sword, and hits me with it.]

Can you tell me about that music, though?

[Walks over to a pile of DVDs, knocks them onto the floor, and picks up a copy of the film Up.] We like this one better. [Climbs onto couch] Jumping on the couch! Jumping on the couch! [Leans over back of couch and begins strumming the neck of his father's guitar, which is sitting on a stand.] Ya Ya Ya! Ya Ya Ya! Yaaaabooo! Ya-boo!

But do you remember the music I'm asking about?

Yeah.

What did you think of it?

Good.

Why was it good?

Make it louder. Mama and Papa [made] it louder. I'm going upstairs.

Tess, do you remember the music?

No.

Are you sure?

Actually, I do.

What did you think of it?

[Sticks out tongue, grins widely, and starts dancing.] Doo-doo daa-daa! Doo-doo daa-daa! [Runs out of room] Jumping on the couch! Jumping on the couch! [Heard from other room]

During dinner, we again listen to the album. Several excerpts:

"King Kong Kitchie Kitchie Ki-Me-O"

[Both begin shaking around in their seats, chanting] Poo butt station! Poo butt station! [Reportedly, this is generally considered an endorsement.]

"Jump Down Spin Around"

Tess [begins jumping up and down and spinning around]: This is a good song for jumping and spinning around!

Eamon: I have to go potty.

"Jamaica Farewell"

[Tess has left room. Eamon continually rams a He-Man figure recently found in my parents' attic against my foot.] These are my bad guys! recommended
