Jackie Canchola

Description: A low-key joint refreshingly void of Capitol Hill's usual long lines.

Decor: A mishmash of stained glass, wing chairs, and random antiques playing up the historic building, with carpeting—accented with splashes of neon pink—befitting a roller-rink lounge.

Fun fact: Charlie's has occupied the same spot on Broadway since its opening in 1976.

Other noteworthy 1976 happenings: The Son of Sam commenced his NYC murder spree, the Ramones released their self-titled debut album, Sylvester Stallone's Rocky won the Oscar for best picture.

Happy hours: Daily 3–7 pm and 10:30 pm–1 am.

Happy-hour drink specials: $3 MGD drafts, $3.50 select microbrews (Hale's Mongoose, Manny's), $4.50 select cocktails (Grape Nehi, Kamikazi).

Happy-hour food specials: Discounted small plates, such as $5.25 deep-fried calamari and $5.25 tempura vegetables.

The only unpretentious place to get a decent Cobb Salad round B'Way. People who haven't found the "pause" button on their foodieness tend to keep away, which is kind. Mmmm.

I love Charlies. It's non-pretentious, the drinks are good and strong, and the waitstaff is sassy in the good way. It's my fave place to get sloshed with a large, diverse group of friends!
