Seattle-born, New York–based artist Amanda Valdez’s new painting show at Prole Drift includes a room transformed into an imaginary sky, the walls dotted with small round canvases in the formation of the Gemini constellation. Each canvas was hand sun-dyed; there are no rough edges, only blue bleeds. On another wall, seven glimmery, drippy paintings on paper look like wet monster mouths. Embroidered paintings on canvas suggest wet openings, too. Valdez explains that she’s always had the sense of colored shapes floating around inside her body, dislodged, ready to be put down in two dimensions.
