In the summer of 2008, Cornish dance student Joe Sodd III (special skill: tap dancing) was murdered on the streets of Minneapolis, his hometown. The crime is still unsolved. Before his murder, Sodd cofounded a dance collective called the New Animals with his friend Markeith Wiley (special skill: b-boying). Five years later, the New Animals are ready to perform Tre, their “ode and shout-out” to Sodd, which embraces both life and death. It contains gleeful college party scenes and gut-clenching passages where dancers are struck down onstage while others torque their bodies as if wrenched by fate and grief.
