While the Muppets are best when presented in a variety-show format that enables the Jim Henson Company to explore the limits of puppetry, the best of their movies are classics. I’ve got a soft spot for The Great Muppet Caper, but I acknowledge that The Muppet Movie is the first and best of all their films. It’s an all-singing, all-dancing road trip origin story that pulled the Muppets out of the small screen and introduced the whole world to their vocabulary. If you haven’t seen it since childhood, it’s even better with beer. (Central Cinema, 1411 21st Ave, central-cinema.com, 7 pm, $7 adv/$9 DOS, Jan 10–15)
