Because anonymous handles aren’t all that anonymous—IP addresses reveal your location (ahem, Chihuly)—a Republican senate staffer has been fired for posting the comment “All faggots must die” on JoeMyGod during the DADT debate last week. Joe Jervis, the blog’s namesake, posted a transcript of his brief conversation yesterday with Georgia Senator Saxby Chambliss, who apologized and said, “we just wanted to be very careful and handed this off to the Senate Sergeant at Arms, because this is going to seriously impact somebody’s life and we wanted to make sure we got this right.”

The senator has yet to name the canned commenter.

  1. He’ll never release a name, and why should he? We’re in a furious rage over this, and throwing his staffer to the wolves would be a cruel thing to do on his part (not to mention a politically stupid thing to do in Georgia). This was the most he could do without alienating the people who elected him.

The remark was completely inappropriate coming from a Senator’s staff, and the commenter is no longer on the Senator’s staff. Even if Jimmy Whatshisname goes on being a worthless troll, who cares? Being an asshole on the internet is nothing new or shocking. At least he’s not doing it from a government office.

And really, if you wanted to know, aren’t their payrolls public information? If the internet really wants to know who’s been fired from Saxby Chambliss’s office, the internet will find out.

  2. Hey Dom, nice of you to call out the Chihuly clones while completely glossing over the fact that the KEXP clones have been doing, at the behest of their employer, the exact same thing.

  3. Good. That shithead deserved it.

And while you’ll get “a” location from an IP address, it doesn’t necessarily mean it’s the right one. Mine, for instance, says I’m in Waterloo, Canada.

  4. The Senator didn’t say the staffer was fired, terminated, or is no longer employed. He said the staffer was “removed”, which just means the staffer is no longer working in the Senator’s office, does *not* mean he got canned. For instance, if the staffer were actually a Pentagon liaison? (see: http://blogs.ajc.com/political-insider-j… )

Granted that’s a cynical way of looking at the situation, but that’s usually the best way of viewing these things.

  5. What’s so funny is that whenever a person says something like “all faggots must die,” it’s basically them coming out of the closet and admitting they’re gay. And they never realize it, but the rest of us do. Who else but a self-loathing gay dude would utter such words?

  6. maybe jeff, but i wasn’t aware of that, AND that’s not what you wrote. you said was the KEXP did the same thing:

Hey Dom, nice of you to call out the Chihuly clones while completely glossing over the fact that the KEXP clones have been doing, at the behest of their employer, the exact same thing.

    which is another thing altogether.
