Seriously, if I’d known that Malaysia had these kind of rules, I would have moved there ages ago.

  1. You do know that most of the hippies are now the Tea Bagger retirees, right?

I mean, the March on Washington and MLK Jr’s speech at the reflecting pool was almost 50 years ago.

Maybe Malaysia is on Island Time?

  2. @4 That’s an exagerration.

I believe it was India that used to stamp Hippy’s passports with “SHIT” — Suspected Hippy In Transit.

  3. I’m guessing the Grateful Dead never played Malaysia.

And, WiS, no, “most” of the hippies are Not Teabaggers now. You wanna see real hippies? Hit up the Tonasket Barter Fair in the spring – I’d LOVE to see you try that line on those folks.

  4. I know that hating on hippies is totally cool on Slog, but next time try substituting queer for hippie just to see if it’s still funny.

  5. That really looks like a fake that some Dick Cheney lovin’ bigot put up in their hotel room after seeing someone not dressed exactly the way their elite prep school required them to dress while they were growing up and pretending to be straight.

There’s just so much hatred bubbling under the surface.

  6. @11: I would never tell someone who to love or make a decision about their character based on who they chose to love. However I am more than happy to hate on young lazy, smelly, pieces of shit blocking the supermarket doorway with the dogs they use as props in their panhandling. So there’s that minor difference.

  7. As an expat living in Malaysia, that sign is from 40 years ago, and was not from any government office. There are lots of “hippies” visiting Malaysia, constantly. They are called “backpackers” now, but they look the same, and are just trying to travel, have an adventure and not spend much doing it. And yes, it is the death penalty for drugs, here.

  8. so you’re saying that hippies are nurture and not nature? my burning man lava lamp actually dimmed…if you’re stuck on Hawaii and tell a state agency you’re panhandling they’ll give you a plane ticket to LA, it’s cheaper than having you stress the whales

  9. After a very long and thorough presentation our asian client’s sole art direction comment:

“Not too hippie, not too punk.”

Those are words to live by.
