  1. Portlanders will quit their jobs (the ones who have them, anyway) rather than be transferred to the Bay Area?! I may have to go check it out!

…Oh wait, “wages up to 20% lower than Seattle…”

  2. “Oregon is one of only a dozen states where the majority of its residents aren’t from there… but Portland is still about 80 percent white, making it one of the most homogeneous metropolitan cities in the country.”

I like how NPR equates “whiteness” with “homogeneity”, even though the majority of the population is from somewhere else, which would imply a lack of homogeneity.

  3. @1 It’s also a lot cheaper to live there versus in Seattle. It’s especially better for poorer people since OR does not have a sales tax.

@2 Seattle’s not that much diverse. Plus, Seattle has a lot more ethnic neighborhoods, whereas Portland’s more blended together.

I’m not sure what the article refers to when it states that OR voters kept blacks from moving to the state. I think that is incorrect. While it was written into the OR constitution that black people could not move into the state (finally repealed by referendum in 2002!), I do believe that that was rarely enforced, if ever.

  4. @5 how is a sales tax worse for anyone? In washington, when a person gets paid, parts of their check are exempt from sales taxes- real food, rent (I think?), savings. In oregon, your entire paycheck is taxed, boom, right away. No chance to make choices which result in less taxes.

  5. @5

Seattle has a lot more “ethnic neighborhoods”? Hahahahaha!

Holy shit, I haven’t been to Portland yet, but Seattle is by far the WHITEST place I’ve ever been. Portland must be like fucking Leave-it-to-Beaver, Stuff-that-White-People-Like central!

  6. Portland needs to be careful or it will become the ‘Next Athens/Austin/Seattle/Williamsburg’ and find out first hand how that is not a great thing to be.

  7. The “Seattle is the Whitest Place Ever” people never leave Capitol and Queen Anne Hills and/or ignore the existence of Asians, East Africans, and Latinos. Yeah, Seattle is not the center of African American culture but that’s not the only sign of diversity.

  8. Food carts, young white people, bicycles, rock and rollers… how fun NPR! How about non-unanimous jury convictions and a legal system rivaled only by the progressive state of Louisiana? Oregon’s a fucking backwater.
