Sad news indeed. As a transplant that started in the rural south, I appreciated that Joe was one of the few authors that articulated well the situation of understanding both worlds.
Deer Hunting is a fantastic book, a travelogue into a mysterious scary world most of us (thankfully) never experience. And the lunacy, rage, and ignorance that grips Flyover Country has grown in influence and threatens us all.
He did his work with compassion and class. Sad news, indeed.
