The Washington State Republican Party held a presidential straw poll at its annual fundraising gala, and Godfathers Pizza CEO Herman Cain won by a hair. (Perhaps the same hair I once found in a slice of Godfather’s pizza.) Cain won 54 of 357 votes cast, followed closely by Mitt Romney with 52 votes, and Tim Pawlenty with 51.
“The close results demonstrate that the Republican Party does not have a clear frontrunner,” WSRP chair Kirby Wilbur told the Seattle P-I’s Joel Connelly. Um, no shit, Sherlock. But the most amusing take on the straw poll had to be the GOPer I heard this morning on KUOW’s news broadcast, who said something to the effect that with a Cain candidacy, the Democrats would no longer be able to play “the race card.”
Because, you know, Cain is black. And that’s how Obama managed to win in 2008: by oppressing the white man. Or something.
Yes, please. Nominate Cain.
Wow. With this attitude by the al-Qaeda-allied Chinese-backed Republicans, Kucinich is a lock.
So, by nominating Cain the GOP would actually attempt to “take the ‘race card'” away from the Dems by – what? – essentially declaring: “we’re not racist, ’cause our guy is WAY MORE BLACK than you’re Godless/Socialist/Commie/not-Born-In-The-USA guy”?
Well, that and watch 70% of their base sit on their hands come 2012. So, for that alone I guess it might be worth it.
I used to work at the Godfathers Pizza on California Ave (now a gay bar) in West Seattle. Never saw a roach in my life until I worked there. Technically the roaches came from the chocolate factory upstairs, nothing they did could get rid of them.
@3 Remember, this is the same party that fucked up the last election by putting a woman on the ticket. Way to lose the bigot vote, guys!
Maybe they were still thinking that HRC would be the Dem nominee, and needed to counter with a woman of their own.
Regardless, there doesn’t appear to be much of a plan in today’s GOP.
They are gambling that the conservative minority votes they pick up would amount to more than the white racist votes they would lose.
I am inclined to disagree.
