As anyone who haunts the parks department’s website knows, this area of the park will “remain closed until summer 2011.” Aren’t we there yet? Isn’t it technically summer (in spite of all evidence to the contrary)? Those fences have been in the way approximately forever. So I called the parks department yesterday, and the news was good: The fences are coming down on July 14. Also known as Thursday. As well as Bastille Day.
Speaking of Bastille Day, over the weekend I saw a guy sleeping elsewhere in Cal Anderson with a hilariously placed baguette. It’s after the jump.

I’ve lived in Seattle for 15 plus years and Cal Anderson Park has spent most of that time being chained off for a variety of reasons.
Our parks department in this town sucks.
don’t blame the parks department, blame seattle public utilities who fucked up the lid on the reservoir. they initially put in shitty fill dirt which had to be completely dug up and redone. now we (the parks department) are trying to get the grass to grow enough so it has a fighting chance once the fence comes down. think about it…there is maybe 6 inches of dirt on top of concrete. not exactly the best conditions for growing lush turf. i’d like to see the fence stay up longer but public pressure is bringing it down. oh, and we’ve had signs on the fence with the july 14th date for some time.
and as an aside, anyone who lays in the grass at cal anderson is an idiot.
