Earlier this year, a longtime and well-known Seattle actor named Mark Chamberlain died after a bicycle accident. Chamberlain was a regular bicycle commuter, biking to theaters for rehearsals.

Some of those actors, led by Ian Bell, are trying to raise money to build memorial bicycle racks inside ACT (“encouraging theatre professionals to ride their bikes to work”) and outside the Seattle Rep. The webpage, which has a Paypal button if you care to donate to the project, is here.

  3. Actually @2, Mark probably would have been genuinely touched by this gesture on the part of his friends and colleagues. He was an avid and articulate proponent of bike commuting, and rode his pretty much everywhere. Locating racks at ACT and SRT, two theatres where he worked – and rode to – frequently, is a fitting and thoroughly appropriate way to memorialize him.

  4. I sort of find this ironic. “Let’s encourage the activity that killed him!” It’s like naming a municipal swimming pool after someone who drowned.

  5. He wasn’t killed on his bike, although he happened to be on one when he had some sort of stroke-like attack. At least that’s my understanding. He died several days later when on his way out of the hospital.
