This week the Lovecast is honored to welcome Dr. Anna Kaminski, medical director from Planned Parenthood. Hats off, everyone.
Dan and Anna discuss the risks of herpes, chlamydia, pre-come, ass-licking and other deep medical topics. Anna quotes from scientific studies and Dan makes repulsive off-color jokes.

For the oral-HSV person, if you have ever had a cold sore/fever blister/whatever on the mouth, your odds of getting HPV from oral sex are essentially zero, as you are already infected with HPV-1 and cannot get it in more than one location(provided you have an otherwise healthy immune system). While oral HSV-2 is TECHNICALLY possible, it’s incredibly rare.
Also, dental dams or condoms re-purposed as dental dams (cut the end to make a tube, then a lengthwise cut) can prevent oral-genital transmission of HSV (as well as HIV, chlamydia, syphilis, etc.). There’s also one study that suggests that ordinary plastic wrap (without tears, obviously) prevents transmission of HSV, though there isn’t scientific corroboration of the study (necessary for consensus).
Yay! I’ve been annoyed before when Dan ‘eeews’ at herpes, and everything said today was spot-on. A disease where 80% of carriers don’t know they have it (and *another* 10% of carriers thing they’re cured) is not a big deal for most people. Fear of herpes should not drive relationship decisions. ALSO, some 90% of adults have HSV1, so if you give up oral with him and move on to some other guy, you’ll be taking the same risks. Bad luck he’s had in the past does not make him more dangerous than your last or next partner. I have had herpes for 10 years and it is NOTHING for me. I don’t regret the sex than got me this malady with no symptoms or outbreaks.
Anna Kaminski is a great guest, glad to have her back.
I’m extremely jealous of Girl in the South’s boyfriend. I want a girlfriend who rims my ass deeply and loves it!
Great show. Very informative.
hey dan,
just listened to the podcast. it was great, as always. but i wanted to add that taking a probiotic or eating things with live active culture (yogurt, etc) can also help reduce the chances of getting yeast infections.
hi dan! love the show!
i called in this comment as well. during the yeast infection conversation, anna kaminski says if you feel discomfort or itchiness you should head to your local drugstore and pick up a yeast infection (YI) suppository (not a direct quote, but pretty much). this is troubling because these symptoms can indicate any number of STIs but it can also be a bacterial infection (BI). if you use a YI remedy but you have a BI you will be in agonizing pain. i mean severe pain that leaves you writhing in agony. seriously. i would encourage listeners (readers) to see a gynecologist if they are experiencing these symptoms, especially for the first time. i have made this mistake. trust me, it’s horrible.
I have gotten vaginal yeast infection from a guy’s tongue. He had been drinking beer. I thought there might be a connection between the beer and the yeast…
1) if there is disease risk, um… that’s what dental dams are for??
2) i don’t know what the risks are for intestinal parasites over there, but at our end of the world the primary risk is giardia, which is pretty unpleasant, but you can also get it at kindy, or from drinking dodgy water, so… hey.
