An extremely disturbing story. I hope that guy falls in a river and drowns.
Guns are awesome tech and banning them doesn’t eliminate shit. Are you going to ban foundries, gunpowder andf metal craft?
All of us are due to start following our philosophies to their ligical conclusions.
WE SCIENCE PLATO NIGGAZ NAO!
Park Ranger? When I read the story I was immediately reminded almost a year ago nineteen people were shot in Tuscon for daring to go to Safeway to see Gabby Giffords.
The Insane and Evil kill.
Our society does not deal with either effectively.
Executed murderers have a zero percent repeat rate.
the trolls get so testy when gun users make guns look bad. #2 —> check yourself before you wreck yourself
“The trolls get so testy when drivers make cars look bad.”
hyperbole! The most accessible opinion on the internet!
@ 6, guns aren’t simply interchangeable with anything else. You are automatically wrong when you play that rhetorical game.
@7
Yea certainly not interchangeable with cars, cars are far more dangerous than guns.
@7 *sigh* you got me, its true, its horrible to compare cars, which killed 38,000 people in 2006 ( the last year I can find stats for ) vs the relatively minor 3100 guns killed the same year.
Maybe we can compare guns to heart disease, for dramatic effect? shoot, cdc says heart disease killed 450k people in 2006.
ok I found it, for 2006, the closest thing I find to 3100 for cause of death was drowning.
“The trolls get so testy when drownings make swimming look bad”
I fixed it!
@5
A correction- some gun users make themselves look bad. My chainsaw doesn’t look bad because of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre. My kitchen knife set doesn’t look bad because some have used knives to kill. My hammer doesn’t look bad because blunt objects have been used as murder weapons. And a gun, if I happened to exercise my Constitutional right to keep one, wouldn’t look bad because some people use them to murder.
But please, please keep beating this drum libs. Between that, your constant negative comparisons of our great nation to any country at all and your hatred and bigotry towards the Christian faith most Americans cherish you’ll do conservatives work for them at elections.
@8 Whether you’re being deliberately ignorant or not, the point is that they have two completely different functions, so comparing them is rhetorical masturbation. It shows that the writer has little understanding of logic.
@11 If you studied psychology, it wouldn’t be such a mystery to you.
@12 your mom has little understanding of logic.
Sad and horrible local story at the start of the year. No politics. No snarky comments. Except… I have the hopeful vision of every bone in the perp’s body cracking under the swing of a baseball bat – before the real pain and suffering is meted out.
@11
Oddly, my recollection is that the Patriot Act was supported by both parties in being made into law.
Strangely, I recall a Democrat president Obama refusing to let those portions of it due to sunset do so.
I agree that our Constitutional rights seem threatened. I don’t agree that this is a partisan problem.
@10: Guns have no use other than to kill things. A car is a mode of transportation, primarily. Saws and hammers are carpentry tools, primarily. Knives are tools of food preparation and suchlike, primarily. While they could be used as weapons, such uses are incidental.
A gun’s primary purpose is to inflict grievous and potentially fatal harm to a living being, and is an inappropriate tool for any other task. This is what separates them from cars and knives and swimming pools. Nice false equivalency, though.
I do put this question to you, though:
The USA is inferior to another country in some respect. Is it nobler to deny this and insist that America cannot in any way be beaten, or to confront the fact and seek to change it?
@16: Who mentioned the PATRIOT Act?
Why is it that so many local stories are posted by the AP? Don’t local nuze organizations have reporters or has the economy gotten so shitty that they can’t even afford their own reporters anymore.
he will kill himself. you read it here first.
can we get back to the topic of this asshole? he shot 4 people in skyway last night, too.
the best outcome is that he freezes to death in the snow tonight.
A marginally better outcome might be if one of perhaps several hundred unmanned drones already operational within U.S. borders anyway were to use its sophisticated sensors to find this asshole just before he freezes to death so he can go on trial.
You know, since they’re available and all.

Yea my bet is that he, being clearly insane, kills himself or freezes to death.
@ 17 is exactly why @ 6 and @ 10 are, and always will be, wrong on that point.
Guns are a right, and are here to stay even if the 2nd Amendment was repealed. I suppose that makes a lot of their defenders intellectually lazy. (In SB’s case, it’s also a result of his fundamental dishonesty, well documented in the diaries of this blog.)
Oh my god, I can’t imagine what it’s like to be one of those people holed up in the visitors center tonight. The thought that there are wee ones (story said diapers were running low) in there makes me crazy with worry. If their parents get through the night without grinding their teeth down to nubs, they’re calmer people than I.
@ 21, blog discussions ALWAYS go off on tangents, and those tangents are often more interesting than the subject of the original post. If it’s related, you have nothing to complain about.
@23, I agree..
The Parks Dept does not get a free pass on these incidents, however. They have thrust themselves into LEO functions due to budget/mission pressures and result in actions such as this. Park and FS Rangers should not be in the line of fire.
RIP Ms. Anderson.
[If he’s an Iraq vet, wouldn’t be a surprise if he was crazier when he came back than when he left]
It is clear from what was found in the guys car that he’s a war-fantasy gun nut. This armed he-man Ted Nugent fantasy is very much a creature of the right wing and promoted by the right wing, including ordinary right wing politicians, who casually throw off one liners about shooting people and then say, “What’s the problem? It was only a joke.”
But you can’t argue with gun nuts like those in this thread and their love for their sense of victimhood is so deep they aren’t even willing to notice that they already won their shitty little political war here in the USA.
Hunting is cool, but his has nothing to do with that.
@27 How can they not be in the line of fire? The gun nuts trolling this blog lobbied for the rights of people to bring loaded firearms into the frickin park. They are encouraging people to carry guns all the time, no matter whether there is a purpose or not. The gun nuts tell people they aren’t real men if the aren’t carrying a gun ready at all times to get into a firefight with bad guys. Because it makes no sense, there is a high likelihood that a disproportionate percentage of the people who heed their call to carry arms all the time will be crazies or those on the edge. For this, these gun nuts DO bare some responsibility.
But don’t worry, the gun didn’t kill someone, the crazy guy with the gun did. I mean, if he didn’t have a gun he just would have done it with a… pencil… or… something… right?
Can we ask all the gun-owners to form a posse, hunt the guy down and shoot him? Isn’t that what the “well-trained militia” is supposed to do? Maybe they could form a circle around him, and all fire at once. Then some would die as martyrs, and they could have more fuel for their argument that this is a noble cause.
Bush’s stupid wars claim yet another victim. How come we never count the casualties at home?
