Hero Hot Potato: Russian president Vladimir Putin says that Edward Snowden—who, thank god, told us the US government was secretly spying on its own citizens like we never knew before—says the former NSA contractor isn’t welcome in Russia, where Snowden is holed up in the airport. But provided Snowden keeps clam with his secrets in Russia, Putin says he has no plans to hand over Snowden to the US, which is sticking him with trumped up espionage charges.
KOMO Gets It Wrong on Ecstasy: After a person died and others got sick this weekend at the Gorge Ampitheatre, reportedly the result of drug overdoses, KOMO blames a substance called “Molly.” As they put it, the drug was “promoted as ecstasy, but was actually ‘Molly,’ a powerful form of ecstasy sometimes mixed with other drugs… Sarina Fahrner, the chief nursing officer at Quincy Valley Medical Center, said the hospital treated more than 100 overdose patients from the concert, all of whom took the drug Molly.” KOMO interviewed Fahrner as a medical authority, who said, “When you have cocaine and LSD and meth all mixed together, it just does terrible things to your body.” I don’t doubt that people overdosed and got sick at the Gorge—it was also a very hot weekend—but Molly is ecstasy, and nothing else. Molly is defined as unadulterated MDMA. It isn’t a mix of cocaine, LSD, and meth. If a dealer sold something called “Molly” but was actually a composite, the dealer lied. If these folks got sick on a mix of drugs, that mixture wasn’t called Molly, as KOMO reported. If ecstasy is cut with something else, anything at all, it ain’t Molly. People need to watch out for drugs from sources they cannot trust, but they also need to worry about credulous news organizations claiming that common drugs—ecstasy, MDMA, and Molly, which are all the same things—are something that they aren’t. Drugs are dangerous enough without spreading misinformation. And exaggerating the harm of drugs only makes the problems worse.
This Is a Joke: Whether it is supposed to be a joke is another matter.
Countdown in Eygpt: Egyptian military gives an ultimatum to Mohamed Morsi, giving the president what sounds like 40 hours to capitulate to protesters’ agenda or resign power:
“I think it’s highly unlikely that Morsi will be able to make a deal with the opposition in 48 hours. I don’t think anyone wants to deal with Morsi anymore,” said Wael Nawara, a longtime political activist, and the co-founder of the liberal Dustour party. “So that effectively means that the military will basically appoint some kind of transition government,” he said.
