• During their set at Heartland on Friday, Portland rock trio the Woolen Men broke a guitar string during the second song, then accidentally busted through their kick-drum head with a kick pedal two songs later, before finally snapping a bass string (nearly impossible!) on their second-to-last song. Other than the bad luck, their set was thoroughly enjoyable and included a cover of the Fall’s “Psycho Mafia.”
• An anonymous tipster admitted that 30 seconds into the S performance at Chop Suey on Sunday, they burst into tears—unexpectedly blindsided by Jenn Ghetto‘s voice and vulnerability. Later, the tipster reported that an adorable man was popping and locking along to Lovers, which did not cause tears, only admiration.
• Which song do you prefer: “Wrecking Ball” by Miley Cyrus or “Locked Out of Heaven” by Bruno Mars? If your answer was both/neither/who cares, you are correct, because they are the same song.
• Defunct, revered Seattle post-punk group A Frames have four songs appearing in a film titled Animals by Spanish director Marçal Forés, which will screen at the Seattle Lesbian & Gay Film Festival on October 15.
• An anonymous sound guy was aggressively disappointed when a man dressed as a cowboy (a) did not play country music, (b) played what sounded like the same non-country song for more than an hour, and (c) would not leave the stage so the sound guy could clock out.
• If you decide to stay indoors and paint a wall during this rainy weather, don’t listen to Chicago. It’s just a really bad idea.
• It’s rumored that one half of THEESatisfaction, Stasia Irons, has relocated to Brooklyn. Also, THEESat’s Black Weirdo party last month in Brooklyn was a huge success—the line for entry is said to have gone around the corner.
• Last Thursday, someone said, “Got my mojo twerkin’.” And with that, the whole twerking thing officially jumped the shark.
• Master Musicians of Bukkake have dropped off the bill of Hypnotikon: Seattle Psych Fest. Tokyoidaho have replaced them in the lineup, which includes the legendary Silver Apples, Lumerians (fresh off opening for My Bloody Valentine’s North American tour), CAVE, and eight other national and local groups. Hypnotikon takes place October 11–12 at the Triple Door.
• After five years of dating and countless premarital sexual relations, singer/songwriter/harpist Joanna Newsom and comic/actor/musician Andy Samberg tied the knot in Big Sur, California, this past weekend. Congratulations to the newlyweds, who seem like a much better match than their forerunners in sandy-haired-musician/brown-haired-actor mashups. (See Gibbard vs. Deschanel, 2012.)
