I had the privilege of meeting Andy Stott at last weekend’s Decibel Festival, and the fact that he closed out his unerringly confident set of concrete-toned techno bangers with swaggeringly low-tempo new single “Violence” was the icing on the cake. Utilizing nothing more than a crackling, corroded synthetic melody, singer Alison Skidmore’s enigmatic whispers, and the burliest, bassiest bit of drum machine programming I’ve heard this year, it comes off as sexy, terrifying, futuristic and ruinous all at once. An impressive feat of forward-thinking sound sculpture from one of the most exciting electronic producers out right now.
