CBS reports that the Texas governor has decided to excuse himself from the field. Reporters apparently got ahold of some remarks the candidate plans to give later on today in St. Louis, which read: “I step aside knowing our party is in good hands, and as long as we listen to the grassroots, the cause of conservatism will be too.”
WILL BE WHAT, TOO, PERRY? Listening to the grassroots, too? What do the grassroots whisper to you, sweet Texan? Oh, I see. You’ve elided the phrase “in good hands” in the third clause in order to sound more folksy. Fair, but confusing.
The news is unexpected but not surprising. Perry’s polling below 1 percent. He stopped paying his staff back in August. The only thing he really had left to do was pick out a pair of defeat glasses and say his goodbyes.
