The Sorrento Hotel in 1909, when it was still under construction.

I usually run that photo of the interior of the Fireside Room, but I can’t stop thinking about this photo of the Sorrento under construction in 1909. Courtesy of Sorrento Hotel

Now that the election’s over (first results here, analysis here), we can all get back to staring into the middle distance not thinking about anything. Or, if you’re a readerly type, staring into a book on your lap at the silent-reading party while Paul Matthew Moore lightly, exquisitely plays piano for two hours straight. (How does he do that? We’ll never know.) Or staring in the middle distance, not reading the book on your lap, while listening to Paul play piano (me, half the time at the reading party—he starts playing Erik Satie and I just melt).

You know what the reading party is, but here is what the reading party is in case you’re not sure. Here is what the reading party sounds like. Here is where the reading party happens. It’s all ages, it’s free, and there’s a menu you you can write on to put in orders for drinks or food without yapping. It’s a good idea to get there before 6 pm to get a good spot. People who get there after 6 pm sometimes end up sitting on the floor. That’s how good Paul’s piano-playing is.

I’m bringing Between the World and Me by Ta-Nehisi Coates. And you? What are you reading?
