Sumac—a newish doom-metal group featuring guitarist Aaron Turner (Mamiffer, Old Man Gloom, ex-Isis), drummer Nick Yacyshyn (Baptists), and bassist Brian Cook (Russian Circles, Stranger freelancer) have had to cancel their February 20 date at the Funhouse because Canadian citizen Yacyshyn’s visa was denied. The show will go on with Japanese “Catastrophic Noise Metal” group ENDON and Black Spirituals. Funhouse booker Brian Foss is searching for a band to replace Sumac. If he fails to do so, the venue will lower the cover charge.
Here’s what I wrote about Black Spirituals in the paper this week:
Oakland duo Black Spirituals engage in spontaneous (de)composition with drums, electronics, and guitar. Their free-verse-poetic dialogues writhe with unexpected, exhilarating activity, marked by Marshall Trammell’s speedy percussion clatter and Zach Watkins’s arsenal of enigmatic noise makers.
