unpoetry at the Frye

Is Seattle in its poetry era? Over the past couple years, small poetry and performance events have been popping up all over the city, and this collaboration with the Frye Art Museum offers extra collaborative flavor by blending in visual art. Using a form called ekphrasis (I had to look it up, too), artists will craft their work in direct response to specific pieces on display. This iteration intermingles with Lotus L. Kang’s I hear the hollow boom of time, a sculptural installation that, in its own way, responds directly to Frye’s architecture. The presenters of the evening include dancer Noelle Chun, intermedia artist María Dolores A. Matienzo, and guitarist Tom Scully. (Frye Art Museum, 6:30 pm) NICO SWENSON
Margeaux Feldman

You might know multidisciplinary artist and educator Margeaux Feldman from their Instagram meme account @softcore_trauma, which often pairs captions about healing with images of Calico Critters and cuddly animals. As a queer person living with chronic illness and complex trauma, their mission is to promote mental health via various platforms, including visual art, writing, and workshops. Their debut book Touch Me, I’m Sick: A Memoir in Essays demonstrates how we can embrace queer forms of care, intimacy, and community in a fractured world that stigmatizes illness and mental health. The collection weaves together theory, personal narrative, and cultural criticism, investigating “the lengthy history of branding girls, women, and femmes—and their desires—as sick.” Feldman will join queer activist and writer Mattilda Bernstein Sycamore for a conversation at local treasure (and Genius Awards Short List!)
