(CINEMA) The year is 1958, the city is Paris, the director is Louis Malle, the actress is Jeanne Moreau, the composer is Miles Davis, the cinematographer is Henri Decaë, the plot is based on a cheap crime novel, and the glorious movie is titled Ascenseur pour l’échafaud (Elevator to the Gallows). Though Malle’s next film, The Lovers, was to be his masterpiece, Elevator to the Gallows has the best jazz soundtrack in the history of cinema. (See Movie Times, p. 87, for details.)
