Printers and copiers need an unprinted margin of about 1/4″ so that the paper can be grabbed and fed through the machines, which is why most posters have their design bordered by a thin, blank perimeter. Using a paper cutter to trim off this frame yields an effect called “bleed”โ€”the ink runs out to the paper’s edge and any partial components (in this case, the automobile) become enhanced by the absence of a border. It’s a great way to add drama to your design. Cut something off. It’s a powerful trick that so few people take advantage of.
