Printers and copiers need an unprinted margin of about 1/4″ so that the paper can be grabbed and fed through the machines, which is why most posters have their design bordered by a thin, blank perimeter. Using a paper cutter to trim off this frame yields an effect called “bleed”—the ink runs out to the paper’s edge and any partial components (in this case, the automobile) become enhanced by the absence of a border. It’s a great way to add drama to your design. Cut something off. It’s a powerful trick that so few people take advantage of.
