  1. Fanboys come in two flavors: the reactionary ones who can’t deal with change, and the open-minded ones who welcome it. The latter have more fun.

  2. I was going to watch this but it says I have to get the latest QuickTime.

As you know, the Obama Administration supports only Open Data formats — not high priced proprietary technology.

  3. the only thing keeping me from wanting to see this is the fact that Kirk inexplicably looks like Zack Efron. Although, I guess it’s strangely fitting, seeing as how Zack Efron is an alien.

  4. @8,

I know what you mean. They forgot to put Jar Jar Binks in the passenger seat, and they didn’t even try to explain Kirk’s unusually high midichlorian count.

  5. What, the fact that little Jimmy Kirk can so blithely destroy what would in his time be a fucking 270 year old antique sports car? Or the fact that apparently people are still using petroleum-powered internal combustion engines in the 23rd Century? Or the fact we see him experience the first of umpteen bazillion hanging-by-his-fingernails-from-a-gaping-precipice situations he’ll have over the course of his life?

I feel for you Jonathan, but given that I’ve already lived through every permutation and perversion of “Star Trek” since the first airing of “Man Trap” more than 42 years ago, I’m just going to chalk this up to yet another reinterpretation of Roddenberry’s vision, and frankly, probably not even the worst (Hello! “ST:V”? “ST: Nemesis”?).

So, buck up lil Trekker – after all, it’s JUST a TV show.

  6. The opening scene of silly boy-Kirk precociousness is lame, and a waste of a perfectly good antique corvette.

The rest… I’ll reserve judgement. I still have my hopes up.

  7. The thing is, it is hard when your imaginary friends let you down. I think fanboys follow the doings of our imaginary heroes with as much empathy and enjoyment as ancient Greeks and Romans got from stories about their wacky soap opera gods.

I’m with you 8 and 11. This is all very Phantom Movie.

JJ Abrams is a menace, and he must be stopped.

  8. Random impressions: the car/cliff stunt is just stupid. Then the motorcycle ride induced a Top Gun flashback. Why is Vulcan in such a fashion rut? I am somewhat worried that this Kirk might have a little “Dubya” doctrine thing going on. “Buckle up”? Why not just have him say “Let’s Roll”? It looks like they gave the Jar Jar role to Scotty. And does anyone really think Kirk wears briefs? Maybe boxer briefs. Whatever this trailer is selling, I’m not interested.

Also, what about Captain Pike? And will the Klingons be white dudes with beards or black dudes with beards?

  9. The trailer seems to cast Kirk as some sort of bad boy who needs to find his way. I’ve started rewatching the original series and that interpretation couldn’t be more wrong. Despite Kirk’s way with the ladies, it’s still clear that he takes his job seriously. One of the first episodes alludes to his teaching at the academy before becoming captain of the Enterprise.

  10. The thing that gets me is the primitive hull construction method shown in the first trailer. Talk about retro. You want me to believe a bunch of welders eyeball that hull together plate by plate outdoors with little hand torches? And this in a time period with the technology to manipulate matter as energy into any form desired? Get real.

  11. I saw the trailer and thought “Gee this movie is just like every other piece of shit that comes out of Hollywood” The only way you could tell it was somehow Star Trek were the Vulcans and the insignia on the uniforms.

And Kirk destoryed a 300 year old Corvette? Kirk should now die in this movie. This movie will be released in May 2009 and out on DVD by the middle of June. So save your money! You can pick it up in the $4.99 DVD Discount Bin a couple of weeks after release.

Star Trek died with Roddenberry: LET IF FUCKING DIE OFF ALREADY!!!!

  12. You guys do realize the guy who created “Felicity” is now in charge of resurrecting the Star Trek franchise.

JJ Abrams is going to ruin this. It should be a new crew, with new personalities and new mission but JJ Abrams has a little problem with making anything new. Basically everything he does is a remake with overacting. Just looked at his track record:

Mission Impossible III: a remake of a TV show with Tom Cruise staring really hard and calling it acting.

    Cloverfield: Godzilla with handheld cameras.

Alias: A stupid version of La Femme Nikita stretched over a weak on-going narrative.

Lost: Gilligan’s Island remade with no ending.

@15 please don’t read Ain’t It Cool News and stop reading Fark too.

  13. I expect better from the sloggers. Only a fool judges a movie based on a 2 minute trailer.

@25 get a grip. I saw the Rocketeer with my father when I was a kid. Halfway through the movie he looks over at me and ask if the Rocketeer’s boots are made of asbestos, since they don’t catch on fire. I wanted to slap him.

    @30. Agreed.

  14. Whatever. I knew I wouldn’t be watching this the second they cast Zachary Quinto and his fucking face as Spock.
I’m sure he’s a decent actor and a perfectly nice person, but I cannot stand the sight of his goddamn face.

  15. “Mightily concerned”? About what? That this movie might ruin the Star Trek brand or make it suddenly uncool if the movie bombs?

Things were going so well, too…! What a shame if the franchise actually faltered or made a rare misstep!
