Atrios makes an excellent point

While the fact that virginity pledges and abstinence-only sex “ed” don’t stop teens from having sex is unsurprising, I doubt that even proponents are particularly surprised. They aren’t interested in abstinence, really, they’re interested in making sure “bad girls” get punished for having sex by being subject to the appropriate consequences. So it actually works as designed.

  1. Almost like the way that the most vitriolic anti-abortion advocates don’t actually seem all that concerned with “life” in the sense of offering any kind of help to unwed mothers or uncared-for children; They mostly seem interested in scolding women for being dirty little harlots.

    Imagine that.

  2. Is this satire? Working well? How is increased risk of pregnancy or disease “working well” ?

Seem you are better off just being honest, putting on a condom, and having sex like normal humans.

  3. New Yorker had an article on this last month. The deal is: they know the girls are getting laid. The girls get pregnant, get married, and are bored repressed uphappy twentysomethings with multiple kids. Which is fine with church elders. To which Sven adds: bigger churches faster! Wheeeeeeeee!

  4. I was raised Catholic. All I ever heard was ‘don’t get pregnant.’ I didn’t hear don’t have sex.
    I guess they knew better.
